What Is The Seattle Center Academy?

Seattle Center Academy (SCA) is a two-week summer arts program that allows 7th and 8th graders from across King County to expand their skills, cultivate new interests, and heighten their creativity through a dynamic curriculum in dance, music, theatre, media, technology, visual and literary arts. SCA provides transportation, meals and materials to ensure the program is accessible to all youth and to secure a highly diverse student body.

SCA’s mission, in unique partnership with over 25 top cultural institutions, is to inspire young people at a pivotal time in their lives by exposing them to experiences that positively shape their futures. Participants select two classes for the session and spend 40 class hours discovering potential they never knew existed. In classes, during lunch, or while on the bus, they bond with youth from different communities, with varied interests and abilities. All of these interactions result in extraordinary learning.

Another integral part of SCA is Reach For It! This inclusion program provides students with disabilities added support from professional staff and high school mentors so they can successfully participate in classes with all other students. For 17 years, Seattle Center Academy has enriched the lives of young people and created ideal circumstances for them to achieve. In the final day celebration, students demonstrate their newly acquired skills, sense of community, and excitement about the world of possibilities ahead. Their inspiration touches the lives of all those around them.

Praise For The Academy
“I learned how to feel comfortable with myself. I had the freedom to express myself and be confident. I learned to work with the people around me. We got to use our creativity to create the show. Making new friends was so easy! Everything was so much fun!”
- Student

“I learned that I am an important part of the world.” – Reach For It! Student “I was so excited when I was told that I got to go to the Academy! It was one of the best things that I have done. To tell you the truth it changed the way I felt. I hated school this year! I didn’t find anyone who saw things the way I do. . . In class I found other kids like me!”
-Student

“Before this experience, when a person with a disability would walk into a room or on the bus, I would stare because I was curious. Now I realize they are just like anybody else… Thanks to this program, I have managed to make friends with people I never imagined being friends with and help a friend with his artwork.”
- Mentor

“Seattle Center Academy gives students a broader view of all the possibilities in life and the world around them. It’s the best summer experience we’ve ever had.”
– Parent
