The beauty and reawakening of spring is celebrated at the Safeco Insurance Festál Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival. From the booms of Taiko drums to the silence of ikebana flowers, the event is a feast for the senses. Delicious Japanese food, tea ceremony demonstrations, and artwork explore this complex culture. Attendees may take part in a Go tournament and lessons, origami plane contest, martial arts expo, aviation lectures, sake sampling, and many other demonstrations and hands-on activities.
This year, the Enburi Dancers/Musicians are featured on two days of the festival as a gift from the City of Hachinohe, Aomori, the sister city of Federal Way, in a cultural exchange with the Duwamish Tribe. Seattle City Mayor Greg Nickels will participate in opening ceremonies on April 18th, along with other dignitaries and guest speakers.
The event commemorates Japan’s gift of 1,000 blossoming cherry trees to Seattle in 1976. The trees were planted along Lake Washington Boulevard, in Seward Park and other places around the city.
Presented by the Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival Committee. For more information on the festival and other Seattle Center events, click on www.seattlecenter.com.
