A Washington Tradition
The Farmers Markets in Seattle are a grassroots farm-to-market tradition. They have been a part of Seattle for decades, the earliest beginning in 1907. Locals have been making a living selling products for years, varying from baked goods, local wines, wild fish, fresh berries and produce from both sides of the Cascades. The intimate face-to-face interaction of urban citizens with the rural farmers is the catalyst that enables this exchange to continue.
A Wealth of Local Markets
Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets are organized by the Neighborhood Farmers Market Alliance (NMFA), a community-based non-profit supported through vendor fees. Several offices within Seattle help keep these markets available to the community: The City of Seattle Office of Economic Development, King County Agricultural Programming along with many market volunteers.
Within Seattle almost every neighborhood boasts a market of some type, from a traditional farmers market to a European flea market. As with anything, continual support from Seattle neighborhoods for local farmers is vital. “Support your local farmer. They’re providing local fresh food, while sustaining the earth,” said Chris Curtis, Director of the NMFA. While trying to maintain the soil quality and habitats around Washington, these farmers are reaping and sowing high-quality products, whether it’s fresh corn, crisp peas or red raspberries.
Curtis, who organized the first U-District Farmers Market, has been there every step of the way as the markets have grown. From its beginning in 1993, Curtis saw it double in size in three years. After eight years, other communities around Seattle were asking to have a market of their own. Many suburban communities also boast lively fresh food filled markets including Bellevue, Burien, Carnation, Renton, Woodinville and Bothell. The following is a list of markets in the Seattle area with location, hours, and months of operation.
